Journal & Map Help in Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School

English PC Demo · Developer journal/map explanation · Reviewed November 3, 2026

The short answer

Use J, the documented default mouse-and-keyboard journal key, to check objectives in the Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School Demo. The developer describes a journal that tracks quest progress and completion. They also explain that the game moved away from a map in the interface, so pressing an assumed M hotkey is not the same as opening the journal.

Find the unfinished task before revisiting a puzzle

  1. Open the journal with J, or your current journal binding.
  2. Read the progress and completion information for the task you are following.
  3. Compare that task with the place or item currently blocking you. A completed room and an unfinished campus quest are different states.
  4. If you are already on the upper Clocktower floor, choose the sun-box, lens or bell stage that matches your actual obstacle.

The official Demo description explicitly includes quest tracking and prioritising classwork. This guide does not invent a complete quest order, a quest-marker toggle or an exact journal submenu that has not been inspected.

Why an expected map button may not be there

In March, a player asked for an inventory key and a map hotkey. Freezman explained the choice to remove the map from the UI and let players learn the campus as it opens gradually. That statement concerns the interface map; it does not mean there are no maps or signs anywhere in the world.

Use the journal to identify the objective you are pursuing, then use the environment and the area you have actually unlocked. Do not assume that a missing M action proves your save is broken or that every campus area should already be accessible.

Main progress, side tasks and a natural stopping point

The developer distinguishes self-contained rooms from campus quests and describes natural breaks between those sections. Campus exploration is not on the room timer. See the pacing and timer distinction if you are worried that reading your objective is consuming an escape-room attempt.

A broader Extra Credit devlog says some side-content interaction supports story progression, while not every quest must be completed. That is a published design explanation, not an all-Demo checklist. For a particular locked credits door, use the specific detention/credit checks.

Know which task you are returning to

You have found the journal action and can compare an unfinished objective with your current location. If the recorded quest state and completed room disagree, report the exact quest/build and preserve the save; this page does not provide an unverified reset fix.
